Hartbeespoort actress, Chantal van Zyl, is currently starring on the New York stage in the well-known play, The Lady of the Camellias. The play is an adaptation of a play by Alexandre Dumas.
Chantal was invited to join the theatre company, Shakespeare Downtown, for this play after working backstage as an intern in 2021 and as a stage manager in 2022.
Chantal plays the role of Prudence, a former courtesan. She shares the stage with various well-known actors like Billie Andersson, Craig Braun, Zack Ignoffo, Rickard Claeson, Archie Colville, Evan Olson, Sanna Izmirlian, Prabal Panjabi and Jazz-Ella Reveilleau.
Chantal is the daughter of well-known Hartbeespoort residents Rene and Anton van Zyl.
“It is such an honour to share the stage with these amazing actors and be directed by the great Geoffrey Horne,” says Chantal. She started her adventure in the Big Apple when she received the Eleanora Duse Scholarship in 2018 at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute which specialises in method acting. After finishing her studies, she is working behind the scenes and as an actor in New York before returning to South Africa’s film industry.
